Locked out

Get back in without FTP

From BetterShield’s own recovery tools. None of them needs FTP or a call to your host.

  1. Open your latest recovery link

It is emailed to the site’s admin address when you activate BetterShield. Press its one button: the sign-in protections pause for one hour, and your settings stay exactly as they are.

  2. Sign in, and keep the next link

Using a link issues the next one straight away, on the page and by email.

  3. No link to hand? Use a printed code

Printed recovery codes are a second way back in. They come from Quick Setup or “Issue recovery codes” under Protect › Recovery: eight single-use codes to keep somewhere that is not this site. Open the address on the sheet with one code added to the end.

Locked-out guide

Before you need it

  • Generate a fresh link from Protect › Recovery at any time; generating one stops the old one working.
  • A link you never use stops working after 90 days, and BetterShield warns you in the last two weeks.
  • Issue printed recovery codes on the same screen and keep them somewhere that is not this site: they work without email.
  • Someone lost the phone they use for two-factor? A backup code signs them in, and an administrator can turn two-factor off for them.
